As a country that enjoys a great deal of gambling activity, lottery has always been one of Singapore’s most popular forms of entertainment. Punters enjoy the thrill of a lucky number, and the possibility to win big with just a few dollars in their pockets.

In fact, a report shows that nearly 52 percent of Singaporeans have purchased a lottery ticket at least once in the past 12 months. And 45 percent of them purchase it every week.

The sums betted on lotteries and sports in the last financial year increased, a spokesman for the Tote Board told The Straits Times in December 2022. This was a 40 per cent spike from $6.6 billion in the previous financial year that ended in March 2021.

This increase was due to the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in the country. The Tote Board, which governs lottery operator Singapore Pools and horse racing operators Singapore Turf Club, said that the resumption of global sports events had also contributed to the spike in betting amounts.

Despite its popularity, the lottery is not without its risks. It is not uncommon for people to be tricked into buying a ticket and placing a bet on someone else’s behalf. A woman shared a cautionary tale about this in a closed Facebook group on Jan. 16, claiming that she was denied a winning lottery ticket because a friend had placed it on her behalf.
